1872-1873
Rizal’s First Year in Ateneo
Jose Rizal became an emperor in his class at the end of his first month. He placed second at the end of the school year, although his grades were marked “excellent.”
1873-1874
Rizal’s Second Year in Ateneo
He received excellent grades in all subjects and a gold medal.
1874-1875
Rizal’s Third Year in Ateneo
He began to take interest in reading in the summer of 1874. He read “The Count of Monte Cristo,” his first favorite novel, “Historia Universal”, and “Travels in the Philippines.” At the end of the school year, he won a medal in Latin and his grades remained excellent but were not as good as the previous year.
1875-1876
Rizal’s Fourth Year in Ateneo
He returned to Ateneo and became an “interno.” At the end of the school year, he got the highest recognition in the class and won five medals.
1876-1877
Rizal’s Last Year in Ateneo
At 16 years old, he graduated and received the degree of Bachelor of Arts with the highest honors.
1877-1878
Rizal at the University of Santo Tomas (UST)
He enrolled in Philosophy and Letters in UST and at the same time, a vocational course in Agrimensor (expert surveyor) in Ateneo. When he finished his surveying course, he got excellent grades in all subjects and obtained gold medals in agriculture and topography
1878-1879
In his second term at UST, he shifted to medicine after receiving the advice of Father Ramon. He also wanted medicine to be able to cure his mother’s growing blindness due to cataracts.
1879
At 18 years old, he wrote award-winning pieces in literature. He won the first prize with his poem “A La Juventud Filipina” (To the Filipino Youth) in the literary contest for native or mestizo.
1880-1881
Rizal founded a secret society called “Compañerismo,” to defend themselves from the Spanish students of UST. He also won a national contest in commemoration of the death of the Spanish author the Don Quixote with his allegorical drama entitled “El Consejo de Los Diose” (The Council of the Gods.)
1881-1882
He finished his fourth year of medical school having grades of five excellent, three very good, nine good, and two fair.
